This after school program is designed for children in grades K through 6 who attend school in St. Paul.
The CHILE Pepper Kids program is housed in the Marcial Vasquez Education Center of La Puerta Abierta United Methodist Church where Christian values are demonstrated through the love and care of the staff. Like the name “La Puerta Abierta” (the Open Door), this program is open to everyone.
This program focuses on homework assistance and a safe place to be cared for until parents are able to pick up their children.
Teachers are Bilingual (English/Spanish) so they are able to assist the children whether their homework is in Spanish or English. Our teachers are screened with a background check. A ratio of 10 children to 1 teacher is not exceeded.
The days and hours of operation are:
Monday through Friday 3:30 – 6:30 pm
Early release days 2:00 – 6:30 pm
on St. Paul Public School days only.
Children ride the bus from their schools to La Puerta Abierta United Methodist Church at 690 Livingston Ave in St. Paul’s West Side. The CHILE Pepper Kids staff meets them at the bus stop and escorts them into the building.
Children are given a snack and some time to play or relax. They work on their homework with the assistance of the teachers. There is time for arts, crafts, games, stories and lessons from the Bible, and outdoor activities as weather permits and time permits.
